Fly
Fishing on the Skagit
As
you stand in some of the most famous steelhead fly water in the
world,
you start to realize the stresses of the world suddenly do not exist...
the constant chaos of life, or work does not apply anymore.
You stand on the rocks where legends have stood before you.
The emerald green waters brush against your leg as you stand knee
deep in tradition. Whether it be your first time with a fly rod,
or a life long passion (or addiction), we can book a trip based
on your needs.
The
Skagit and Sauk river systems contain some of the largest strains
of Steelhead in the west coast, making it a popular destination
for the avid fly fisherman. These remarkable fish average 8-14 pounds,
and it is not rare for a 20+ pounder to hit your line. With it's
wide sweeping bars and infinite fly water, these rivers provide
endless opportunities for any angler apt to fly or spey (double
hand rod) fishing.
As
well as it's spring run Steelhead, the Skagit does offer a hatchery
run of Steelhead from around Thanksgiving time to about January,
not to mention the fact that it is home to all 5 species of Salmon
(chinook, coho, pink, chum, and sockeye), Cutthroat, and some of
the biggest Dolly Varden Char on the west coast. The Dolly Varden
can average 15-20 inches, weighing 3-5 pounds with some upwards
of 7-8 pounds! These fish are a great adversary and offer year round
opportunities with a 6 weight fly rod and will absolutely gobble
a well presented fly.
When
fly fishing, it is best to learn using your own rod. This enables
you to continuously progress with your current equipment since you
are comfortable with it. Petosa's guide Service does provide fly
or spey gear for those of you who do not have your own gear. We
also provide leaders and flies (some of them hand-tied by me) to
match the species we are targeting. Don't forget about the shore
lunch to keep you fishing strong, all day long.
